The Brief:
Part 1:
This brief asks us to consider the idea that an unrelated word and image, when combined,
can convey a message that is greater than the sum of the parts.
We are being asked to convey a concept by juxtaposing word and image.
can convey a message that is greater than the sum of the parts.
We are being asked to convey a concept by juxtaposing word and image.
We are being asked to create a promotional campaign combining word and image
that will contribute to the promotion of a museum or collection located in Melbourne.
The purpose of the campaign is to increase local visitors to our chosen site. Our client Museums and Art Galleries of Australia Victorian Branch have through extensive research ascertained that Melbournians do not visit the many galleries and collections in their city as much as international and interstate visitors do.
Our audiences are the people of Melbourne. Our challenge is to disrupt their complacency and to
persuade them that our chosen institution is exciting/challenging/intriguing and well worth a visit.
Part 2:
The flipside is in the form of an information graphic. We are tasked with designing a map showing where the collection is located and how to get there.
The Outcome:
My poster advertises the Melbourne Now exhibition at the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia. It is an exhibition that celebrates over 200 local artists and designers. For my poster I chose a word to do with how this exhibition will continue on in the future? What will come next? The continuation of Melbourne art and design. I combined the word 'next' with an imagery of one collection in the exhibition. It was difficult to choose which work to show however I went with this image as it shows the 'space' of the gallery, the space of Melbourne artists. With a clear intention and goal in my poster I created this design.
For the flipside of the poster, the map, I attempted to create a simple infographic reducing cognitive load and relying on locals to recognize the grid of Melbourne CBD and know where Federation Square and Flinders station are. Relying on my audience, I added in an image of the building, who may have seen the building before but not have known it was a gallery.
